ABOUT THE FORT
The Fort is an innovative new centre for the arts managed by artists, for artists, established to help protect and promote Brisbane’s vibrant arts culture. The centre aims to grow many artistic endeavours through collaboration and drawing on collective resources, skills and networks. Conceived by two young visionaries Pete Gorrie and Kelly Timmons, The Fort project is now a massive collaborative effort aimed at supporting the entire process of creative production – from conception through creation, display, performance, distribution and review. The Fort comprises music recording and rehearsal studios, music retail, photography and film studios, web, graphic design and illustration offices, artist studios, art galleries, a fashion design space, a large function, rehearsal and events space, project and event services, and the provision for much more!
Operating out of the beautiful Bell Bros. building, 57 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, The Fort is only a few footsteps away from big cultural institutions like the Valley’s Entertainment Precinct and further down Brunswick Street to the Judith Wright Centre, 381 Brunswick, and the Powerhouse.
The building has been separated into 10 (very different) leasable spaces. Each space has been leased for 2-5 years, either by individual artists or small organisations which include Rehab Records and Relics, Versus Galleries, Renegade Empire, Vintage Youth Broadcasting Coorporation, United Notions Records, Thumbprints and The Fort Arts Hub Inc.
THE FORT ARTS HUB INC.
The Fort Arts Hub Inc. was formed late 2008. The role of the not-for-profit organisation is to carry out and maintain The Fort vision, manage The Fort project and other projects and activities within the centre, and to maintain and build important business and community-based partnerships necessary for the success of The Fort project. The organisation also provides a platform for communication and exchange between members, colleagues and the broader Brisbane arts community.
The Fort Arts Hub Inc. has leased several spaces itself – including two of the largest spaces in The Fort to (further) provide artists and the community with affordable space to produce, rehearse and present artistic work without needing to enter into long term contracts. This also helps the centre to be more vibrant, productive, and involve a broader spectrum of the community.
THE FORT is a 3-minute walk from Brunswick Street Train Station, bus routes 370, 375 stop on the adjacent corner. Car parking is available in surrounding side-streets.
